FOODIE GETAWAYS FROM HELSINKI: ESPOO

After Finland expanded metro network and opened The West Metro, the people of Helsinki have also been able to find Espoo. The distance from Rautatientori (Helsinki Railway Square) to Aalto University’s metro station in Otaniemi is actually just 12 minutes. Now you can finally discover Espoo!

Just a few meters from metro station, you’ll find the door to what is perhaps the best reason to go on a foodie getaway from Helsinki to Espoo. ”Good things come to those who wait”, says Restaurant Fat Lizard’s slogan. This refers to how Espoo traditionally has not had a very exciting restaurant selection or culture. In Espoo, almost all the restaurants are located inside of the shopping mall and have a habit of closing earlier than the supermarket.

Now you can have a culinary experience in Espoo every day of the year!

Unlike the rest of Espoo! Restaurant Fat Lizard is open every day, all year round.

Ok, now it’s clear that Espoo has a restaurant, but what does it offer?

Besides the regular À la carte menu, they also serve their FAT Brunch every Sunday of the year and you can catch themed days, like the current FAT XMAS Buffet.

Let’s take an even closer look at the menu, specifically how Fat Lizard chef Matti Hälvä and his right-hand man Emanuele Garieri took the bronze medal at API Pizza Baker World Championship 2018 in Italy. It’s maybe not the world champion pizza, but certainly the best pizza in Espoo can be found at Fat Lizard.

Sunday brunch at Fat Lizard is called FAT BRUNCH. This is not simply due to the restaurants name, but because it really is a “fat” brunch. The exact menu varies, but always starts with breakfast, continues with vegetables and salads before hitting the fish and seafood table, followed by main courses that even many dinner restaurants can’t beat and that you can (if you are able to), still have as much lovely dessert you want.

Lunch is served every weekday and vegetarians are always offered their own alternative. For example, on this Monday, Spicy Chicken was served (chicken, chili, tomato, pita bread, rice & dill yogurt), and the vegetarian alternative was Spicy Nyhtis, which substituted the chicken with pulled peas.

The à la carte menu features infamously delicious dishes such as “RUDOLF” – a tender reindeer shoulder with reindeer heart powder, fresh truffle, “Puikula” potato purée & lingonberries. The main dish can be balanced with a fun starter, such as “HOPPERS TACO” – Tacos made with deep fried crickets.

The drinks selection is diverse and especially the beer lovers will be spoiled. There is a big selection and one special tap is reserved for a Fat Lab prototype from Restaurant Fat Lizard’s partner microbrewery. Naturally, there are alternatives to beer, such as a selection of mocktails and up to 34 choices of wines.

FAT XMAS lunch at Restaurant Fat Lizard is a bit different from other Christmas lunches (it’s not traditional even for Espoo residents). It’s a Christmas lunch that does not include Christmas food. No beetroot salad, no pickled herring, no casseroles or large amounts of ham. FAT XMAS lunch tables are packed like brunch, serving “All you can eat” -style dishes. The menu is so comprehensive that it’s recommended to view the photos below. The photos were taken on December 5, 2018, at the year’s first Restaurant Fat Lizard Christmas lunch.
